Seeing your book in the wild is always a thrill but most authors, if they are honest, have mixed feelings about going into a bookshop after the initial excitement of their novel’s hardback launch or transition to paperback has passed. Although they hope to see their book piled high on a table and will settle for a single copy on a shelf, too often they won’t find their precious creation at all, its place usurped by the countless new books launched every week.
Two days ago, walking the dog, we passed @waterstonesrichmond. The paperback edition of my novel Manhattan Down has been out for a few months now but we didn’t see it on a shelf, or piled on a table. We saw it in that most hallowed of positions – in the window. I was so emboldened, I strode inside with the confidence of a champion and signed every copy they had. All three of them.
Occasionally, just occasionally, the sun shines on you and all is well with world.
